CBI arrests 5 in Harpreet case NEW DELHI, Oct 5 — In a significant development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested five persons, including two women, in connection with the “mysterious” death of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) president Bibi Jagir Kaur. While four of the five accused were apprehended by the CBI sleuths from Phagwara district of Punjab, the other accused was nabbed from Delhi minutes before she was to leave for Britain, a senior CBI official told The Tribune here today. The accused, who were arrested yesterday, have been identified as Dalvinder Kaur (arrested from Delhi), a British national, Harminder Kumar, Satya Kumari, Paramjit Singh and Sanjeev Kumar, he said. The CBI had already registered a first information report (FIR) against Bibi Jagir Kaur and would produce the accused before the court in Patiala by tomorrow, the official said, adding that Dalvinder Kaur, who had been arrested from Delhi, would be taken to Patiala after seeking a transit remand from a Delhi court. On June 9, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had on a petition by Mr Kamaljit Singh, who claimed to be the husband of Harpreet Kaur, directed the CBI to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Harpreet Kaur and submit its report within four months. Seeking directions for registering a case against all those found responsible for causing Harpreet Kaur and her child’s death, Mr Kamaljit Singh had on April 27 asked for handing over the probe to an independent agency like the CBI. He had also sought the court’s directive for fixing responsibility on persons involved in the disappearance of evidence. He had alleged that on account of political power and influence wielded by Bibi Jagir Kaur the case relating to Harpreet Kaur and her child’s death would be hushed up and also those responsible for the same would not be touched. He had further said the facts and circumstances clearly indicated that efforts were being made to hush up the case. Mr Kamaljit Singh had also said neither any first information report was registered nor any report was made to the police even as the cremation was performed “stealthily”. Describing the death as unnatural, he had said Harpreet Kaur’s body was not shown to the petitioner’s relatives nor was the post-mortem examination conducted. He had also said Harpreet Kaur was the last person to commit suicide. Meanwhile, according to CBI sources the special crime branch of the premier investigating agency would probe the case thoroughly and record fresh statements. Harpreet Kaur, alias Rosy, who was pregnant, had died on April 21 under mysterious circumstances. |
