IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is taken by many international applicants to British Educational institutes to assess their level of English.

This test is offered on demand at British Council Offices and other approved centres throughout the world. A grading of 5.5 to 7.0 in IELTS is sufficient for most higher educational institutions. Some others will accept lower grades on condition you attend their English courses conducted during summer.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores in region of 550-650 are also accepted. You could contact the British Council Office on Kasturba Gandhi Marg, New Delhi 110001 or the recently opened centre in Chandigarh.

A-level (Advanced Level) courses are the most commonly used entry requirement to British Universities. Students generally take them in two or three subjects related to their intended degree course. A-Level courses normally take 2-years, but in some places you can study intensively for 1 year. While some colleges insist on A-Level courses as a pre-requisite, for admission to undergraduate degree courses, not all do.

A flight steward/purser’s job is quite similar to that of an airhostess. Starting as an Asst. Flight Steward, you will work alongside the airhostess, while as a Sr Steward you will check the cargo, keep an account of occupancy, handle the duty-free items, serve alcoholic drinks on board, collect the money for in-flight purchases and help the hostess perform her duties efficiently.

Personal attributes like a friendly and helpful nature, ability to communicate, patience and good humour will hold you in good stead. You also need loads of stamina to walk up and down the aisle pushing trolleys and serving the passengers on board.

The typical eligibility criteria for a flight steward are as follows:

* Male candidates below 26 years

* Minimum height - 165 cm (barefoot)

* Weight - in proportion to height

* Education - Bachelor’s degree or Class XII with 3-yr diploma in Hotel Management & Catering Technology

* Physically fit with a pleasing personality

* Fluency in English and Hindi

* Knowledge of foreign languages is desirable

* Vision - normal without glasses. Total power of contact lenses for correcting distance vision should not exceed -2D (minus two dioptres)

* Ability to communicate easily with people.

Assistant flight stewards are selected on the basis of performance in an objective-type written test to assess your general awareness and mental flexibility. Those who qualify in the written test are called for group discussion and interview to assess mental alertness and communication skills.

Training, similar to that for airhostesses, is provided but with less emphasis on personal grooming. With experience, a steward can rise to become the senior or chief steward. Your flying career can happily continue up to retirement unlike your female counterparts.

Candidates are taken in as Assistant Flight Stewards in government carriers as trainees on a monthly stipend. On confirmation, the remuneration package is fairly decent. Typically, private airlines tend to pay higher salaries. Flying allowances and other benefits like free travel etc. are additional in both cases. However, international carriers have begun to recruit flight pursers from India only recently.

It is not necessary to join a training programme to become a flight steward as most airlines provide extensive training upon recruitment.

Cartoonists are usually hired by newspaper and publishing houses and various magazines. However, most of the newspapers already have a lead cartoonist with many years of experience (e.g. ToI’s R. K. Lakshman who has become a house-hold name). It may be somewhat easier to start off doing illustrations and cartoons for the inside pages and gradually work your way up. Animation is another related offshoot. CDROM publishing and designing web pages on the internet also require cartoonists to liven up the text.

Cartooning is an in-born skill which can be polished with training and a keen power of observation. Coaching is not required if you have an inborn talent for sketching or caricaturing.

However, if you are keen on formal training, a diploma or a degree in Fine/Commercial Art will equip you with the necessary skills.

* Course: Diploma in Fine Arts & Crafts Design, Drawing & Painting and Graphic Art. Duration: 5 years. Eligibility: After Secondary School.

After dabbling in various styles, you will in time evolve your own `trademark’ style. A brief course in computer animation and graphics would be invaluable.

You could also do a diploma in Fine Arts from any of the local art colleges and polytechnic institutes.

Some knowledge of multimedia or Animation would also help if you want to work in the electronic media i.e. television, internet and CD ROMs.

Amongst several others, the following institutions are good places to learn Animation. But these are fairly expensive courses. Do check them out before enrolling. As yet, the scope for Animation Artists in India is at a low-key.
