Fernandes submits report on WB NEW DELHI, Sept 10 — The Centre today said it would consider all options, including imposition of President’s rule in West Bengal, where the situation was worse than in Bihar as the whole structure of the Constitution was under attack”. Defence Minister George Fernandes, who submitted his report on the situation in West Bengal to Union Home Minister L.K. Advani today said, the entire constitutional structure in the state was “under danger” and there was a serious threat to the life of Union Railway Minister Mamta Bannerjee. Mr Advani, after receiving Mr Fernandes’ report, said the Centre had sent three “advisories” to the state government for improving the situation but there had been no response so far. Briefing mediapersons about his visit to violence affected areas of West Bengal after submitting his report, Mr Fernandes said his report contained what he had seen in Midnapore and Bankura districts of the state and it had no recommendations. “Democracy is about to fall in that state”, he asserted. “Whatever I saw and heard during my visit to some villages in Midnapore and Bankura districts was the most horrendous experience of my political life”, he said. Asked as to what in his opinion the Centre should do in West Bengal, Mr Fernandes, who was asked by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee to proceed to the Left-Front rule state, deftly avoided a direct reply, saying it was for the government to take a decision. On September 8, the Defence Minister had visited Midnapore district which has witnessed violent clashes between supporters of the ruling CPM and the Trinamool Congress in the last few months. |
