Pak national, 5 others arrested
Srinagar car blast case

SRINAGAR, Aug 23 — In a major breakthrough, the police has arrested six militants, including a Pak national and a member of the Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT), in connection with the August 10 car bomb explosion in Srinagar that left 15 persons dead, including a photo journalist, a top police official said today.

Hizb chief hints at bigger step than ceasefire
MUZAFFARABAD (PoK), Aug 23 — Syed Salahuddin, Pakistan-based chief of militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, today hinted at something bigger than a ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir but said before that India had to agree to tripartite talks involving Pakistan.

Involve Pak in talks: APHC
NEW DELHI, Aug 23 — The chairman of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, appeared reticent about APHC having talks with the Union Government on the Kashmir tangle along with the Hizbul Mujahideen.

NEW DELHI, Aug 23 — The Union Power Minister, Mr Rangarajan Kumaramangalam, who died early this morning after prolonged illness, was cremated here with full state honours.

Gulf Air plane crashes
MANAMA, Aug 23 — A Gulf Air Airbus A320 on a scheduled flight from Bahrain to Cairo crashed today in the Gulf several minutes after taking off from Bahrain International Airport, Information Ministry officials said.

 

Treat prisoners equally: HC
CHANDIGARH, Aug 23 — Bringing down the curtain on the practice of some prisoners being more equal than others, the Punjab and Haryana High Court here has quashed the provisions of Punjab Jail Manual dividing prisoners into A, B, and C classes after holding that “there cannot be any classification of convicts on the basis of their social status, education or habit of living”.
