P. R. Kumaramangalam in semi-coma NEW DELHI, Aug 16 - The Union Power Minister, Mr P. R. Kumaramangalam, suffering from severe septicaemia and multiple organ failure, is in a “critical condition”, doctors treating him at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said today. “His condition has shown no improvement for the past few hours. We can say he has gone into semi-coma and continues to be in a critical condition,” the Medical Superintendent of AIIMS, Dr R.K. Sharma, told reporters here. The 48-year-old minister was admitted to AIIMS on Saturday evening for tests to diagnose the chronic fever he had been suffering from for the past two months. On Tuesday, his condition deteriorated and he was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and put on life-support system. Mr Kumaramangalam’s blood pressure remained very low despite high ionotopic support, urinary output was also low and he had developed severe septicaemia (infection in blood), hypo-tension and multiple organ failure, Dr Sharma said. Stating that all necessary investigations were being carried out, Dr Sharma said “but we are yet to establish what had resulted in multiple organ failure.” A 10-member panel of specialists had been constituted to constantly monitor the condition of the minister, Dr Sharma said. Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Mr Krishan Kant, the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Home Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, the Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, the Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes and several other Union Ministers went to the hospital during the day to inquire about Mr Kumaramangalam’s health. |
