The sources said troops closed in on the militants in an operation launched 72 hours earlier. Realising they were trapped, the militants opened fire and then tried to flee, but they were killed in the ensuing close-quarter encounter.

Six rifles were recovered from the gunmen, but the spokesman said there was no information yet on which group they belonged to.

Four persons, including two security personnel and a policeman, were injured in militant attacks, while security forces averted a tragedy in the Kashmir valley last night, an official spokesman said.
