NEW DELHI, Aug 14 — In a candid and bold Address to the Nation, President K.R. Narayanan today expressed concern over the emergence of a new intolerance in society and chided the media for “glamourising criminals.”

Security forces on full alert
 NEW DELHI, Aug 14 — With the threat of terrorist attacks looming large on the eve of Independence Day, especially in the wake of open threat by the Hizbul Mujahideen, the Centre has asked all state police chiefs to take all measures to ward off any untoward incident during the celebrations.

The people are sullen and angry as the nation celebrates 54th Independence Day today. Independence from what and for whom? From the nagging persistence of poverty and social injustice? From the unfair system and corrupt practices? From the clutches of the mafia operating in collaboration with wayward official and political groups? ISLAMABAD, Aug 14 — Pakistan’s President Rafiq Tarar today urged the international community to force India to adopt a realistic and positive attitude towards a solution of the Kashmir issue.

11 militants killed in J&K
JAMMU, Aug 14 — Fourteen persons, including 11 militants were killed in Jammu and Kashmir in militancy related incidents in the past 24 hours, according to official sources.The unidentified militants were concerned at the 12,000-foot Nukkal Pass in the Pir Panjal range of mountains which divides the Jammu region from the Kashmir valley.

139 to get gallantry awards
NEW DELHI, Aug 14 — One Mahavir Chakra, two Kirti Chakras, three Vir Chakras and 22 Shaurya Chakras are among the 139 gallantry awards announced for armed forces personnel on the occasion of the Independence Day.
