Christians flay attacks on secularism

NEW DELHI, Aug 13 (PTI) — Several Christian leaders today held a day-long fast and prayer at the Rajghat here for strengthening India’s secular and democratic traditions and denounced attempts by the vested political interests aimed at destroying the plural heritage of the country.

In an open letter to fellow citizens of the country, the Christian leaders from Delhi, UP and Haryana alleged that some vested interests were trying to paint the religious minorities, who were cherishing the thriving democracy in the country, “as aliens in our home land”.

“The larger secular society is being coerced to conform to politically extremist slogans of one nation, one people and one culture”, the leaders alleged.

“This was an attempt to rewrite history, to communalise both the past and the future of the country”, they warned.
