Tension after civilian’s killing
Tribune News Service

JAMMU, Aug 9 — The curfew which was imposed in the border town of Rajouri last night, continued today also following tension in the area over the killing of one person.

The Army has been called out to assist the civil administration in enforcing the curfew. Reports said the curfew was clamped after the mob turned violent and smashed several government vehicles and ransacked the offices of the deputy commissioner and the DIG police. They were protesting against the firing resorted to by the Army. The Army authorities have instituted an inquiry.

The police said when the troops carried out search operations in the Fatehpur area of the town last evening they were fired upon by militants hiding in a house. The troops retaliated in which civilian Mohammad Sadiq was killed and 18 others were injured. This led to a protest by residents yesterday and today.

A group of people brought the body of Mohammad Sadiq to a mosque from where they had planned to take it in a procession for burial. The police swung into action and stopped it. The protesters raised anti-government and anti-Army slogans.
