Year’s extension for Dr Soch

AMRITSAR, July 18 — The Governor of Punjab in his capacity as Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University has extended the term of Dr Harbhajan Singh Soch as Vice-Chancellor of the university for a period of one year with effect from July 23.

Dr Soch, who is on a visit to Kumaon University in Nainital (UP), as member of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) team, said he was happy that his contribution towards the all-round development of the university had been recognised by the Chancellor and the Punjab Government.

He said he would continue to promote the cause of higher education in the region.

Dr Satinder Singh, Dean, Academic Affairs, Dr R. Bawa, Registrar, Dr SP Singh, Dean, College Development Council, Dr B.S. Ghuman, Dean, Students Welfare, Deans of various faculties, Senate and Syndicate members, teachers, officers and employees associations, Mr Subhash Kumar, general secretary of the Federation of Principals, Mr Ashwani Kumar Sharma, president of private aided colleges, Principal Jagdish Singh, Director of SSSS Management, Mr Prem Singh Advocate, Jalandhar, and different educational and social organisations have hailed the extension of Dr Soch.

Mild tremors in region

NEW DELHI, July 18 (UNI) — An earthquake of moderate intensity shook northern and northeastern parts of India in the early hours today, damaging buildings and forcing panic-stricken people out into the streets. No casualties were reported.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the quake, which measured 6.0 on the Richter scale, had its epicentre in the Hindukush mountains. It hit at 0424 hours.

Tremors were also felt in Amritsar, Srinagar and the adjoining areas.

In Srinagar, the tremors lasted about 15 seconds, shattering windowpanes and forcing residents out of their homes. Two tremors jolted Amritsar and adjoining areas within seconds of each other.

SHIMLA (TNS): An earthquake of moderate intensity rocked most parts of Himachal Pradesh.

It lasted a few seconds and rattled doors and windows forcing the people to come out of their houses.

No loss of life or property was reported.Back
