Union Cabinet halts Jagmohan’s drive
Unauthorised colonies regularised
NEW DELHI, July 18 — The Union Cabinet today approved the regularisation of unauthorised colonies on public land in the Capital, cleared a turnaround plan for Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), and provided for compulsory telecast of Doordarshan channels by cable operators.

NEW DELHI, July 18 — Performing the anticipated balancing act on the autonomy issue, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, today said that he wanted a dialogue without any pre-conditions, parameters and time-frame.

PATIALA, July 18 — Flood waters today forced closure of the Chandigarh — Patiala highway, breached the Ghaggar at Jhajjon village in Ghanaur block and inundated thousands of acres of land in the district besides endangering the Nirwana Branch Canal .

5 Punjab police officials get bail
CALCUTTA, July 18 — The Calcutta High Court today granted bail to five Punjab police officials, including a superintendent of police (SP) and a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), in a 1993 murder case, in which a lower court has convicted them.

Plane crash toll mounts to 56
PATNA, July 18 (PTI) — With one more body extricated from the wreckage today, the toll in Monday’s Alliance Air crash here mounted to 56 even as 54 bodies were identified and handed over to relatives for cremation.
