315 kg of RDX seized in valley

SRINAGAR, July 17 — At least 12 persons, including 11 militants, have been killed in separate incidents in Kashmir valley since yesterday, while the security forces seized 315 kg of RDX from a downtown locality here last night. Militants also kidnapped five villagers in Udhampur district, the police said here today.

The Army seized at least 315 kg of RDX from a transport company at Dalal Mohalla, Maharaj Gunj in the capital city while acting on a specific information here last night. This being the biggest haul of RDX in the state is the second such seizure in the past three months. A defence spokesman said the explosive had been transported from Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh via Delhi to Srinagar in eight packages and was to be delivered to the militants. He said the RDX was meant for targeting state government offices and other disruptive activities in the valley.

Four unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Uploo, Bijhama in north Kashmir district of Baramulla yesterday. Further details of the incident were awaited.

Two foreign mercenaries were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Hoigam, Sopore in Baramulla district yesterday. Two AK rifles, two hand grenades and two magazines were recovered from the site of the encounter, the police said. The spokesman added that the encounter took place when the hiding militants opened fire on a search party of the security forces in the village. One house was gutted in the exchange of fire.

In another encounter between the militants and the security forces two unidentified militants were killed at Kumkadi Behak, Haihama in Kupwara district. Two AK rifles and two magazines were recovered from the site of the encounter, a police spokesman stated here this evening.

Two militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba group were killed while two civilians were injured in an encounter between militants and a joint operations group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the security forces at Ugjan, Dialgam in Anantnag district. The two militants killed were identified as Abu Hamza and Mohammad Afzal, residents of Sialkot, Pakistan. Two civilians identified as Mohammad Ayub Wani and Manzoor Ahmad Dar were injured in the encounter and were hospitalised. Two AK rifles and two magazines were recovered from the site.
