Thackeray threatens to oust Deshmukh

MUMBAI, July 16 — Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray today threatened to oust the Congress-NCP led government in Maharashtra if he was arrested for his alleged role in the Mumbai 1992-93 riots but Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh asserted that the law would take its own course.

NEW DELHI, July 16 — Uncertainty prevails within the Bharatiya Janata Party on the question of giving another term to BJP President Kushabhau Thakre. A new President of the party would be announced next month with an official notification for the BJP presidential election being issued on August 1.

Troops in Sierra Leone to stay
170 peacekeepers airlifted to safety
NEW DELHI, July 16 — India today ruled out its withdrawal from the United Nations peacekeeping duties in Sierra Leone and any change in role of its troops from peacekeeping to peace enforcers.

12 killed in Pak train blast
ISLAMABAD, July 16 — At least 12 passengers, including three women and four children, were killed and 35 injured when a bomb exploded in a train near the Pakistani city of Hyderabad in southern Sindh province this morning, witnesses said.

8 feared dead in cloudburst
SHIMLA, July 16 — At least eight persons were feared to have been washed away in a cloudburst at Bali village, about 40 km from Rampur, last night. Heavy rain wreaked havoc in other parts of upper Shimla district causing extensive damage to apple orchards and property.

One arrested for trekker’s murder
MANALI, July 16 — After a three-day search operation, one person allegedly involved in the killing of German trekker Jorg Weihrauch (26) at Balugera on the Manali-Chhatru-Hamta trek was arrested by a police party here today.
Contractors ‘plundering’ forest wealth
SHIMLA, July 16 — The detection of excess timber worth over Rs 10 lakh at the Rampur depot of the state Forest Corporation recently has once again highlighted the failure of the government to streamline the functioning of the public sector undertaking which has virtually being used as a front by contractors to “plunder” the forest wealth of the state.
