Harpreet case: CBI begins probe

NEW DELHI, July 14 (PTI) — The CBI today registered a preliminary enquiry (PE) to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Harpreet Kaur, daughter of the SGPC President Bibi Jagir Kaur.

After procuring all papers from the Punjab Police and their examination, the CBI had registered a PE in the case, agency sources said here today.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the CBI on June 9 to probe the circumstances leading to the death of Harpreet Kaur and submit its report within four months.

The court direction came after Kamaljit Singh, who claims to have married Harpreet, filed a petition before the court seeking a CBI inquiry into her “mysterious” death.

The agency sources said the special crime branch would be handling the Harpreet case which would also record fresh statements.

The agency had planned a regular case but decided at the last moment to register a PE to conduct a fresh inquiry into the case.
