LUDHIANA, July 2 — Despite repeated denials from the top, there are reports here that the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leadership may be thinking in terms of having early mid-term elections to the Punjab Vidhan Sabha.

NEW DELHI, July 2 — A senior minister of Jammu and Kashmir today alleged that a “disinformation campaign” had been launched over the state government’s demand for greater autonomy and said the resolution could “in no way be termed as secession”.

No Eelam, says Advani
ERODE (TN), July 2 — Union Home Minister L.K. Advani today rejected the demand for a separate state for Sri Lankan Tamils to solve the ethnic problem in the island nation but asserted that India was concerned about Tamils in that country whenever their interests were in jeopardy.

India-Israel joint panel to boost ties

Autonomy: PMO clarifies stand
NEW DELHI, July 2 — The Prime Minister’s Office today said that the matter of the Jammu and Kashmir’s resolution on autonomy ‘‘will be considered in accordance with the Constitution.’’

Sex scandal unearthed, 3 held
GURDASPUR, July 2 — The police has unearthed a sex scandal and arrested Kashmir Kaur, alias Shashi, a resident of the Ladhupur and Renu Bala, a resident of Ghurala. The police has also arrested Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Sohwal, for allegedly kidnapping and sexually abusing a minor girl, Amanpreet Kaur (not real name), resident of the Tibri Road, Gurdaspur.
