JAUNAWAS (Rewari), June 23 — The Director General of Police, Haryana, Mr S.P.S. Rathore, has ordered a high-level probe into the alleged stripping of a woman in this village by a liquor vendor and his sister-in-law, last Wednesday.

The police has arrested Vienna Yadav, sister-in-law of the main accused, Yadhvir Singh Yadav. Yadav was arrested on the day of the incident and the two were presented before newsmen at a press conference, convened by the Superintendent of Police, Rewari, Mr A.S. Chawla, today.

When contacted on the phone, Mr Rathore told TNS that he was seized of the matter and was in touch with the Inspector General of Police, Gurgaon range, Mr Ranjev Dalal, and the police chief of Rewari. According to him prima facie, there were some lapses on the part of police somewhere in the chain of events culminating in the stripping of the woman. “Stringent action will be taken against those found guilty”, he said.

Meanwhile, a police team which visited the village last night was allegedly grilled by residents for registering fewer number of liquor bottles than were seized by them from the illegal outlet run by the main accused. The villagers said that the police team that raided the outlet had seized about 1,000 bottles, but mentioned only 30 bottles in its report.

Significantly, the two accused were produced before the newsmen to give their version. Vienna Yadav said she had stripped the victim. She said her brother-in-law had only intervened to separate them.

However, Mrs Kamla Devi alleged that Mr Yadhvir Singh Yadav had first tried to tear her blouse had hit her in the stomach and stripped her to avenge her husband’s complaint to the police about his illicit liquor trade. She is four months’ pregnant.
