Nine killed in UP poll violence
LUCKNOW, June 14 — Nine persons were killed and over 50 injured today in incidents of firing and bomb blasts during the first phase of panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh which witnessed a voter turnout of 70 per cent.

Suicide bomber strikes again

COLOMBO, June 14 — An LTTE suicide bomber today struck in Vattala, a Colombo suburb, killing four persons and injuring 15 others, including air force personnel.

Ousted MLAs pledge to remove Badal
CHANDIGARH, June 14 — Expelled Akali legislators today vowed to oust the Chief Minister and Akali Dal president, Mr Parkash Singh Badal from power. Claiming that they are the genuine Akalis and had made bigger contribution to the Akali politics. They alleged that Mr Badal had ignored development, helped corruption to increase and developed his personal fiefdom.

Tohra, 7 others held, bailed out
Chandigarh, June 14 — Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Member of Parliament, and seven other members of the Sikh Education Society, were today arrested by the city police for violation of provisions of Section 144 CrPC.

NEW DELHI, June 14 — A Former Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Babu Parmanand, will be the new Governor of Haryana while Mr M.M. Jacob will continue as the Governor of Meghalaya.

Distillery of Bhajan’s son-in-law sealed
CHANDIGARH, June 14 — Associated Distillery, Hisar, which is owned by Mr Anoop Bishnoi, a son-in-law of the former Chief Minister, Mr Bhajan Lal, was sealed today by a special team of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board for allegedly releasing untreated effluent waste, according to information received here.
