Rocket attack on security camp SRINAGAR, June 1 (PTI) — Sixteen persons including 11 militants, three Bangladeshi nationals and a security jawan were killed as militants today fired a rocket at a security camp and setoff a grenade inside the headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI). An official spokesman said here militants fired three rockets at a security camp at Khundroo in the Achabal area of Anantnag district in South Kashmir early today. However, two rockets fell short of the camp and another did not explode, he said adding the militants escaped. Nobody was hurt in the explosions caused by bursting of rockets and the subsequent firing, he said. A jawan was killed and two others injured in a powerful explosion inside the headquarters of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) in Noushera sub-sector of Rajouri district last night, official sources said here today. Security forces shot dead five foreign mercenaries in a day-long encounter at Dara-Sangla in Surankote sector of Poonch district yesterday, the spokesman said. Three securitymen and a civilian were also injured in the encounter. The spokesman said the security forces gunned down three militants, including two foreign mercenaries in an encounter at Trisa village in Baramula district yesterday. Three AK assault rifles, 10 kg of RDX, 25 grenades and some ammunition were seized from them. The police foiled an intrusion attempt by a group of Bangladeshis and killed three of them when they tried to sneak into India from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the spokesman said. Two militants were killed, one of whom was identified as Saifullah of Pakistan, in an encounter with the security forces at Brahamadhar in Udhampur district last night, while a Hizbul Mujahideen militant was killed in an inter-gang rivalry at Kulgam in Anantnag district. Havaldar Tej Singh of Rajput Regiment was critically injured when militants ambushed an army patrol at Zambor in Uri sector of Baramulla district early today, he said. A security jawan lost his life when militants attacked a security patrol with a grenade at Kanhain in Rajouri district last evening. |
Police ends
hostage drama WASSERBILLIG (LUXEMBOURG), June 1 (Reuters) — The police launched an assault today to free 28 hostages, including 25 children, held by a lone gunman in a daycentre in Luxembourg, the police said. CNN television reported that a Luxembourg police sniper had shot the gunman dead. Witnesses heard shooting and saw some children leaving the
day centre. “We have taken action to end the siege,” a policeman told Reuters at the scene in the small town of Wasserbillig near Luxembourg’s border with Germany more than 24 hours after the hostage drama began. |
