6 shot dead in Bihar byelection

NEW DELHI, May 26 (UNI) — Violence in trouble-prone Bihar left six dead as an estimated 62 per cent of the electorate exercised their franchise in Raghopur where Chief Minister Rabri Devi is picking up the threads of the Assembly constituency vacated by her husband.

Three booth grabbers were shot dead by security personnel at Bhimain village under Khaira Block in Jamui Assembly segment when they tried to rig the poll.

Sources said the police had to open fire, when it was fired upon. At least three persons were killed in an group clash at Raghopur.

Reports of ballot paper snatching, group clashes and firing were received from several pockets in the Raghopur, Jamui and Nirsa Assembly segments.

State Director-General of Police K. A. Jacob said a driver of an Independent candidate from Raghopur, Mrs Shanti Devi, was killed and another seriously injured when criminals opened fire at Fatepur village. The injured, Jaggu Rai, later died at the city’s medical college hospital.

Mr Jacob said Kamashwar Singh was shot dead and two other were injured in a group clash under Bidupur police station in Raghopur.

He said more than 45 persons had been detained in the three constituencies for obstructing the poll process.

BHOPAL: An estimated 56 per cent of the 1.12 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the byelection to Kirnapur Assembly seat in Naxat-infected Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh on Friday.

GUWAHATI: Braving incessant rain, more than 20 per cent of the voters cast their ballots till 1 p.m. on Friday in the byelections to the Nalbari, Bhabanipur and Karimganj (North) Assembly seats of Assam.

Meanwhile, the Chief Electoral Officer of Assam has ordered a repoll in five polling centres of Karimganj (North) constituency following incidents of ballot snatching. The repoll will be held on May 29.

SHILLONG: Polling in the Mairang Assembly constituency picked up as 30 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 1 p.m. on Friday.

HYDERABAD: More than 40 per cent of the 3.88 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the first six hours of polling in the byelections to Chevella and Bhongir Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh on Friday.

LUCKNOW: Over 26 per cent polling was recorded till 1 p.m. for the byelections in Soron Assembly constituency in Etah district of Uttar Pradesh. State Chief Electoral Officer Noor Mohammad said polling was peaceful.

Rori records 90 pc polling

RORI, May 26 — Nearly 90 per cent polling was reported in the Rori byelection today. Polling was reported to be peaceful under tight security.

In Odhan, though polling was reported to be peaceful by Mr R.N. Chalia, I.G., present there, an incident of boycott by Congress polling agents in booth numbers 103, 104 and 105 was seen. Mr Sukhdev Singh, Mr Inder Singh, Mr Manphool Singh and Mr Gurdev Singh were sitting outside in protest allegedly against the manipulation of votes and fake polling by the INLD. In booth No 106 more than 400 votes out of total 627 had been polled up to 12.45 p.m.

The Congress leader and nominee in the last election, Mr Ranjeet Singh also visited these booths and viewed the situation. In Rori village with 6300 votes, polling was enthusiastic with 45 per cent casting their vote up to 11.15 a.m. Some of the voters were quite vocal about their displeasure over the selection of the candidate by the Congress.

In Gookan Wali village and Nohia Wali, there was some fault in the EVMs due to which polling was held up for some time till the machines were replaced.
