8 hurt in attack near J&K House

SRINAGAR, May 23 — Militants hurled a grenade on a vehicle of the security forces outside the main gate of the highly guarded Assembly complex here this afternoon, causing injuries to eight persons. In the other militancy-related incidents at least 12 persons, including six militants, were killed.

At least eight persons, including five civilians and three security force personnel, were killed in a grenade attack near the Assembly complex in Jehangir Chowk here this afternoon. The police said that militants hurled a grenade on a vehicle of the security forces at Jehangir Chowk at 12.40 p.m. today. Those injured have been hospitalised.

The attack took place in front of the main gate of the Assembly complex here merely a day after the militants fired a series of grenades in the vicinity of the Civil Secretariat, which houses the office of the Chief Minister and his ministerial colleagues. Earlier, militants made a bid on the Assembly complex on the left bank of the river Jhelum on Friday. Three civilians were injured in the attack as the rocket missed the target and exploded on the opposite bank of the river.

Security in and around the important and high government installations has been beefed up following the recent attacks.

Militants fired at a girl, reportedly for wearing jeans, which is regarded as an un-Islamic act, at Balgarden here on Monday afternoon. Identified as Posha, she was hospitalised along with another woman, Mukhti, also injured in the shootout.

One person who was among the four persons injured in Suthra Shahi locality in the rifle grenade attacks by the militants on the civil secretariat here yesterday succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, the police said.

Militants shot dead three persons in central Kashmir district of Budgam today. Two persons identified as Arifat Khaliq Bhat and Hilal Bhat were shot at and injured in Chandapora locality. They were shifted to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries, a police spokesman said. Another person, Javed Ahmad Khan, was shot dead when militants intruded into his house at Kanier, Chadoora in the Budgam district last night. Four militants were killed in an encounter with the security forces at Saaj Planger village in Rajouri district.

Two militants were killed in separate incidents at Khadi Marg and Dangri in Rajouri district.

PTI adds: Pro-Pakistan Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack, saying activists of the outfit hurled the grenade on the security picket at the main gate of the state assembly.
