Gyanendra held for assault on wife

LUCKNOW, May 16 (PTI) — India player and Uttar Pradesh Ranji team skipper Gyanendra Pandey was arrested here today on charges of assaulting and torturing his wife Pratima for dowry.

The police found charges levelled in a complaint filed by the cricketer’s father-in-law "correct", SSP, Lucknow, B.B. Bakshi told PTI here.

Pandey’s father-in-law had alleged in his written complaint on Saturday that his son-in-law had assaulted and tortured his daughter for dowry, Mr Bakshi said adding investigations in the case were continuing.

According to eye-witness accounts, Pratima was shifted to her hometown of Kanpur from here in a semi-conscious state after she was allegedly beaten by her husband. Her parents came and took her away after being informed by neighbours of the couple.
