The graceful palm
By Satish Narula

EVEN a single landscape feature or ‘emphasis’ plant is sufficient to make the landscape picturesque. The right selection of a plant and its placement makes all the difference. Space permitting, the planting may be in groups to give grove effect or individually. Palms have no substitute and are most suited for this purpose.

Fish tail palm is liked for its foliageThe palms are a symbol of nobility and grandeur. The majestic swing of its fronds (leaves) makes this class of plants unique. There is a wide range of species and one can select various forms, shapes sizes and potential height. Most of these are suitable for pot culture too. The same plant that would otherwise grow to great heights may live in pot for years on end, till it becomes totally pot-bound. It may even break the pot and then it is transplanted in a bigger pot without disturbing the roots, especially the thicker ones. Fresh soil-sand manure mixture is added to fill the gap in pot.

Palms are suitable for almost any location. They make good indoor plants whether in house or office or conservatory. They are also excellent for anenue plantation or could be grown singly for emphasis. The plants spreading or straight growing habits are so disciplined that one could safely grow them to avoid overhead lines. As the beauty of a tree is in its shape and smoothness or elegance of its trunk. Make sure it does not interfere with any overhead structure as it does not permit decapitation that is so ruthlessely and commonly done with other plant species. However, if at any time they suffer due to one or the other reason, they show remarkable recovery, provided they had not suffered for want of water. Remember, they need plenty of water.

Most commonly used as pot plant is arecapalm. It is very hardy and grows in the same pot for years. It also fills the pot by producing the ‘young ones’ which could be separated from the parent plant during rainy season. This could be done by separation by giving vertical cut to the roots with a sharp Khurpa.

Royal palm is most suitable for avenue plantation or two lead the way to a point of emphasis. The smooth rigid and bottle like swollen stems grow almost to equal size when grown in a row. It is due to their royal grace that these are also known as the royal palm.

Fish tail palm is another type that is liked for its foliage. The leaflets are fish tail like and the plant is suitable both for pot culture and outdoor planting. Although most of the palms have insignificant flowering but in case of this palm the bright yellow flowers though smalls come on long, gracefully hanging trusses and surprisingly when they fall, they fall almost one after another is rapid succession. It is amazing and the place down becomes a carpet of flowers.

Chamaedorea palm is also a favourite with gardeners because of its bamboo like stems. They are also fast growing.
