SGPC executive meeting on March 28

AMRITSAR, March 22 — A crucial meeting of the SGPC executive will be held here on March 28. The meeting will recommend the annual Budget to the SGPC general house which is scheduled to be held on March 30. The meeting of the dharm parchar committee will be held on March 29.

The date of the SGPC executive meeting has been fixed for the third time since January this year. Originally this meeting was scheduled for January 27 at Chandigarh. However, this was banned by Giani Puran Singh, Jathedar, Akal Takht, in a hukamnama issued from Guna (Madhya Pradesh) wherein Bibi Jagir Kaur, SGPC, chief was excommunication from the Sikh Panth. Then the meeting was fixed for March 16 which had to be postponed due to differences among the executive members over the issue of the participation of Bibi Jagir Kaur.

Mr Balbir Singh Naushehra Pannua, senior Vice-President SGPC, had suggested that Bibi Jagir Kaur should not participate in the meeting. Under these circumstances, the meeting was postponed to March 23. Again this meeting could not be held on the pretext of the three-day Hola Mohalla celebrations. The meetings were reportedly postponed with a view that the ongoing Panthic controversy would be resolved with the appearance of Bibi Jagir Kaur at Akal Takht.

Now, the political affairs committee (PAC) of the Shiromani Akali Dal has directed to Bibi Jagir Kaur to accept the controversial hukamnama which was rejected by at least 10 Sikh high priests.

It is, however, yet to be seen whether Bibi Jagir Kaur would apply to Akal Takht for appearing before Akal Takht before the SGPC’s annual Budget or not. Giani Puran Singh has already stated that he had not yet received any letter from Bibi Jagir Kaur in this regard. He had said that he could give her time for appearing at Akal Takht only after the receiving of letter from her.
