Vajpayee puts lid on RSS row
Says ban on govt staff to stay
PATNA, Feb 14 — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today sought to put a lid on the controversy over government employees’ participation in RSS activities asserting that the Centre had no proposal to give such a permission. “There will be no change in the existing laws....No such proposal is under our consideration,” Mr Vajpayee told reporters.

Race on for new Army Chief
NEW DELHI, Feb 14 — The process for the selection of the next Chief of Army Staff, who would take over the reigns from Gen. V.P. Malik, has begun with Lt-Gen G. Padmanabhan, the GOC-in-C Southern Command, and Lt-Gen Chandra Sekhar, the Vice-Chief of Army Staff, being the two serious contenders for the post.

Foreign origin issue ‘not priority’
NEW DELHI, Feb 14 — Constitution Review Commission Chairman Justice M N Venkatachaliah tonight said the issue of barring people of foreign origin from occupying high constitutional offices was not a priority item.

13 Attari coolies lose licences
ATTARI, Feb 14 — On the directions of the Union Home Ministry, the Railways authorities have cancelled the licences of as many as 13 coolies working at the railway station here. As per the report of the Home Ministry the coolies have been found indulging in “unfair activities”.

Minister injured during campaign
SHIMLA, Feb 14 — The PWD Minister, Mr Mohinder Singh, was injured when he was attacked with stones and bottles while he was campaigning for the ruling BJP candidate near Kandaghat in the Solan assembly constituency last night.

14 charged with hijacking
LONDON, Feb 14 — The British Police today charged 14 Afghans with the hijacking of an Afghan airliner to the Stansted airport even as 73 of the 142 released passengers flew back to Afghanistan while the authorities here drew up a plan to disperse asylum-seekers to countries with significant Afghan refugee populations.
