CVC to probe post-85 defence deals
NEW DELHI, Feb 5 — The Defence Minister, Mr George Fernandes, has asked the Central Vigilance Commission to institute a probe by the CBI into all defence purchases since 1985-86, when the government banned the role of middlemen in such deals.

Snow in HP disrupts life
SHIMLA, Feb 5 — Life was disrupted here as the town and its adjoining areas had the season’s heaviest snowfall today. Most roads in the town where blocked as a thick layer of snow affected traffic. Men of the PWD have been engaged in clearing the roads. The Hindustan-Tibet highway was blocked at Kufri and beyond. Most roads in the interior of the district leading to apple-growing areas were also closed.

NEW DELHI, Feb 5 — For the first time since the controversy over the decision of the Gujarat Government to lift the ban on its employees to take part in the RSS camp broke out, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today openly defended it.

Jaya seeks CBI probe
CHENNAI, Feb 5 — The bus burning incident at Dharmapuri on February 2 in which three college girls were charred to death, has cast its shadow on the byelections to three assembly seats in Tamil Nadu scheduled for February 17, with AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalitha expressing fears that it would adversely affect her party’s prospects in the poll.

50,000 trees to be axed
PATRAN (Patiala), Feb 5 — More than 50,000 trees hit by a mysterious disease and endangered by water logging, will be axed before March 31 in Punjab. The process has already begun in southern districts — Bathinda, Faridkot, Muktsar, Ferozepore. In some of these districts the felling job has been entrusted to contractors.
