Why not a national debate?

It is a pity that
the crucial question of a constitutional review
should have turned into a wordy duel between the
President and the Prime Minister, in the process
giving it political overtones. The issue here is
not who is right and who is wrong. Each person
has his viewpoint which is open to arguments and
counter-arguments. Such an exercise generally
tends to create bad blood which is surely not the
intention of either the President or the Prime
Minister while spelling out their thoughts on the
desirability or otherwise of a constitutional
review. |

in spot, meeting off
AMRITSAR,
Jan 28 — While it now seems probable that Giani
Puran Singh, Jathedar Akal Takht, in all probability
would stick to ‘hukamnama’ (edict) issued by
him by which Bibi Jagir Kaur, SGPC chief, was
ex-communicated from the Sikh Panth, the executive
committee meeting of the SGPC proposed to be held here
tomorrow to discuss the issue, has been postponed
indefinitely, reportedly at the instance of Mr Parkash
Singh Badal with a view to defusing the prevailing
‘panthic crisis’.

Two
resign from Chautala ministry
CHANDIGARH,
Jan 28 — Two Haryana ministers, Mr Jaswant Singh
Bawal and Mr Vinod Kumar Marya, today resigned from the
Chautala ministry reportedly in protest against the
denial of the INLD ticket for the ensuing Assembly
elections.
