NEW DELHI, Jan 25 — President K.R. Narayanan today decried the social, economic and political injustice being meted out to millions of citizens and justified reservation for women, Dalits and other weaker sections so that the edifice of our democracy would not be like a palace built on a dung heap.

Fidayeen storm Army camp
7 infiltrators shot in Rajouri
SRINAGAR, Jan 25 — Fidayeen of the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen stormed an Army transit camp at Toto Ground, Batmaloo, in Srinagar last night. Two members of the suicide squad and as many Army personnel were killed and six soldiers injured in the fierce clash within the camp.

NEW DELHI, Jan 25 — Eminent English writer R.K. Narayan, Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill, ISRO Chairman K. Kasturirangan and Hindustani classical musicians Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Jasraj and Ustad Vilayat Ali Khan were today honoured with Padma Vibhushan, nation’s second highest civilian award, on the occasion of the 51st Republic Day.

AMRITSAR, Jan 25 — In a move without precedent in the annals of Sikhism, Giani Puran Singh, Jathedar, Akal Takht, “excommu- nicated” Bibi Jagir Kaur, President SGPC from the Sikh Panth. SGPC meeting today
AMRITSAR, Jan 25 — In the wake of the excommunication of Bibi Jagir Kaur by the Akal Takht Jathedar, Giani Puran Singh, an emergency meeting of the general house of the SGPC, the Dharm Parchar Committee and five Sikh High Priests has been convened here tomorrow.

UP power strike may end
LUCKNOW, Jan 25 — the Uttar Pradesh Government and leaders of the striking powermen tonight began negotiations after a marathon meeting of the up powermen Joint Action Committee amid indications of a breakthrough to end the 11-day-old strike.

Chautala hints at joint list
ROHTAK, Jan 25 — The INLD and the BJP appear to have reached an agreement on sharing of seats in the ensuing Assembly elections. This was indicated by the INLD supremo and Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, while addressing the State-level workers’ meeting and newsmen here today.
