NEW DELHI, Jan 24 — Defence Minister George Fernandes today dismissed Pakistani claims that Indian troops attempted to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and accused Islamabad of intensifying border clashes just to raise tension ahead of the Republic Day.

LUCKNOW, Jan 24 — The Uttar Pradesh Government today began working on its threat by issuing appointment letters to 50 junior power engineers to replace the dismissed striking employees of the state electricity board as the stand-off between the two sides continued, an official spokesman here said.

KARNAL, Jan 24 — Despite large-scale bickering over the selection of Congress nominees in Haryana, the final list is likely to be announced by the party President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi on January 27. Highly-placed sources in the Congress high command told Tribune News Service that a tug of war was on between the groups led by Mr Bhupender Singh Hooda and Mr Bhajan Lal, to score over each other in the final nomination list.
