UP talks with powermen fail
LUCKNOW, Jan 20 — The Uttar Pradesh Government today terminated the services of 208 striking powermen and arrested 5,087 others even as two rounds of tough negotiations with leaders of agitating employees failed to throw up a solution.

NEW DELHI, Jan 20 — The Election Commission today declared that Samata Party President George Fernandes, Agriculture Minister Nitish Kumar and eight other Members of Parliament were members of the Janata Dal (United) and hence could not be treated as office-bearers of the Samata Party for the coming Assembly elections in four states.

AMRITSAR, Jan 20 — Even as the Gurbani Gurmat Sidhant Sant Samaj headed by Baba Kashmira Singh has convened a crucial meeting of representatives of various sects of the Sant Samaj on January 30 at Jalandhar to discuss the controversial Nanakshahi calendar, Baba Mangal Singh Satlani, acting president of the Samaj, has demanded immediate removal of Dr Kharak Singh as convener of the 11-member sub-committee on the ‘jantri’ for announcing his “judgement” on the issue.
