Bank staff stir
CALCUTTA, Dec 1 (UNI) — All banks, including foreign and private sector in the country, will remain closed on December 17 in response to the All-India Bank Employees Association-sponsored day-long nationwide strike to press its demand for wage revision. Announcing the strike, AIBEA General Secretary Tarakeswar Chakraborti said here today that they demanded immediate finalisation of the seventh bipartie settlement on wage revision for the country’s nearly 6,00,000 bank employees.
Naxalites kill 5
HYDERABAD, Dec 1 (PTI) — Naxalites of the outlawed People’s War Group (PWG) shot dead five persons, including a TDP activist and three policemen, and looted a nationalised bank in separate incidents in Mahaboobnagar district of Andhra Pradesh since last night. TDP worker Venkataiah (36) was shot dead by Naxalites near Thoomakunta village last night while he was proceeding on a two-wheeler along with his friend to Veepagandla village.

Jharkhand bandh
RANCHI, Dec 1 (PTI) — The 24-hour Jharkhand bandh called by the Jharkhand People’s Party and All-Jharkhand Students Union combine today evoked a mixed response, official sources said. Though major business establishments and educational centres remained closed, movement of trains and buses was by and large normal. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the region, including the mining areas of the Central Coalfields Ltd.
MP’s bribery case
NEW DELHI, Dec1 (UNI) — The CBI today told the court holding trial in the MP’s bribery case against former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and 10 others that it had produced all its witnesses. Additional Sessions Judge Ajit Bharihoke fixed January 11 for recording the statements of Mr Rao and other accused after Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vivek Johri, who supervised the CBI investigations in the case, deposed as the last witness in the court today.

NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (PTI) — The condition of former President Shankar Dayal Sharma, who is undegoing treatment at Escorts Heart Institute here since October 9, is "stable" but he is still on ventilator, hospital sources said today. "There is no deterioration in his health and he is stable," Sharma’s Private Secretary J.N. Kashyap said.
Shantidev Ghosh dead
CALCUTTA, Dec 1 (UNI) — Eminent Rabindra sangeet exponent Shantidev Ghosh died at a hospital here today. He was 90. A disciple of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Shantidev was brought to the city from Santiniketan on Friday and admitted to the SSKM hospital following respiratory problems. Born on May 7, 1910, to Kalimohan Ghosh and Manorama Ghosh at Chandpur, now in Bangladesh, Shantidev came to Santiniketan when he was only six months old.
Chetna yatra
NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (UNI) — Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Sonia Gandhi, flagged off the second leg of the Kargil-Kanyakumari rashtriya chetna yatra here today. The yatra which initially started from Leh on November 18, seeks to promote peace and create awareness among the youth. The yatra is led by Panthers Party chief Bhim Singh.
