Advani meets President
Speculation rife
on Bihar

NEW DELHI, Sept 29 — In a major development, Home Minister L.K. Advani today met President K.R. Narayanan to discuss Bihar amidst speculation that the government may send back its recommendation to impose President’s rule in the state. A Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesman, however, described the 30-minute meeting as "routine".

Debate call a cover-up, says Left
NEW DELHI, Sept 29 — The Left today dismissed Home Minister L.K. Advani's suggestion for a national debate on the use of Article 356 saying the government was trying to 'cover up its mistake'.

US Congress okays one-year waiver of sanctions
WASHINGTON, Sept 29 — Negotiators from the US House of Representatives and the Senate voted to give President Bill Clinton flexibility in dealing with India and Pakistan by allowing a one-year waiver of US sanctions on the new nuclear powers.

Fungus kills 800 deodars in Chail
SHIMLA, Sept 29 — The mysterious disease, which dried up over 800 mature deodar trees in the Chail area over the past five years, has been caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi, a deadly fungus known for its destructive potential the world over.The fungus, identified by a special team of scientists, has been reported for the first time from the Himalayan region.
