17 feared dead in boat mishaps
PATNA, Sept 27 (PTI) — Seventeen persons are feared drowned in separate boat mishaps in Bhojpur district of Bihar since yesterday, according to Superintendent of Police R.K. Mullick. Seven were reported to have been drowned in the Ganga near Barhara police station this morning. Ten persons were feared killed in another boat tragedy which took place near Baharanpur under Sahapur police station last evening.

49 LTTE men killed
COLOMBO, Sept 27 (PTI) — At least 58 persons — 49 LTTE militants and nine Lankan soldiers — were killed and 20 injured in a massive rebel counter-attack on troops south of Paranthan of Kilinochchi early today, Sri Lankan Army said. In the fighting 40 LTTE militants and nine soldiers were killed and 20 sustained injuries.

ULFA leader shot
GUWAHATI, Sept 27 (UNI) — United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Rishiraj Sinha, who began the surrender of militants, was assassinated by motor cycle-borne militants on the city outskirts last night. Rishiraj Sinha, alias Anjan Jyoti Gogoi, was driving his Maruti van when suspected ULFA cadres waylaid him and opened fire with automatic weapons, killing him on the spot.

Suit against Shourie
NAGPUR, Sept 27 (PTI) — A Rs 50-crore defamation case has been filed against well-known columnist Arun Shourie by Dalit activists for his book on their leader Dr B.R. Ambedkar. The case was filed at Gondia in Maharashtra's Bhandara district by a group of 439 Dalit activists. The district has a long association with Dalit movement. It was from here Dr Ambedkar unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha election in the fifties.

Police kills PWG man
HYDERABAD, Sept 27 (UNI) — A Central organiser of the banned People's War Group (PWG) was killed in an encounter with the police at Munjampalli village in Karimnagar district of Andhra Pradesh last night. A tamancha, four live rounds of ammunition and five empty cartridges were recovered from the site. The deceased was allegedly involved in 14 offences, the police said.

War criminal detained
BRUSSELS, Sept 27 (AP) — Forces of NATO in Bosnia detained indicted war criminal Stevan Todorovic early today and sent him to the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague, Netherlands, for trial on charges of murder. A statement issued from the NATO headquarters here said. "Todorovic is accused of wilful killing, cruel treatment, inhuman acts, rape and torture, violations of the laws or customs of war and grave breaches and crimes against humanity."

Pact on deportation
MUMBAI, Sept 27 (PTI) — An agreement has been reached between the Centre and Governments of Maharashtra and West Bengal on the procedure for deportation of Bangladeshi nationals, Trinamool Congress (TC), leader Ajit Kumar Panja said here today. Mr Panja, who was here in connection with Durga Puja celebrations, said the agreement was finalised three days ago.

Albright meets Yasser
NEW YORK, Sept 27 (AFP) — The US Secretary of State, Ms Madeleine Albright separately Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat here in an attempt to kickstart the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process. The meetings, which began yesterday, came just days before the two leaders are scheduled to meet US President Bill Clinton at the White House next week.
