Panel on languages soon: Vajpayee

VajpayeeCHENNAI, Sept 15 — The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, said here tonight that a committee would be set up soon to study the feasibility of treating all 19 languages included in Schedule 8 of the Constitution as official languages.

PATNA, Sept 15 — RJD supremo Laloo Prasad Yadav has chosen to stand virtually alone in a high-stake political gamble by playing the anti-Vananchal card to consolidate his base in north and central Bihar for possible fresh elections even at the cost of alienating the supporting party JMM (S) and JMM (M).

Appointment ban to hit varsities
AMRITSAR, Sept 15 — A virtual "ban" on new appointments (teaching and research) in universities imposed by the state government is likely to affect the higher education, as a number of posts in various departments of the varsities have been lying vacant. The decision will also affect the promotion prospects of teachers.
