VIP security obtrusive: PM
NEW DELHI, Oct 30 (PTI) — Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today said the security network for VIPs was obtrusive and asked the agencies to try minimise the inconvenience to the people. "The VIP security must be made less obtrusive to avoid inconvenience to the public," he said after inaugurating an SPG (Special Protection Group) complex in Dwaraka here. The Prime Minister also asked the SPG to update its technology.
Oppn dharna ends
BANGALORE, Oct 30 (PTI) — The Opposition Congress and the BJP today called off their two-day-old dharna in both Houses of the Karnataka Legislature after the government accepted their demand for a House committee probe into Wednesday’s violence during a farmers’ protest in Sira which claimed six lives. The combined Opposition ended the dharna in the assembly after Chief Minister JH Patel announced the government had agreed to set up the house committee, after parleys in speaker Ramesh Kumar’s chamber to end the stalemate.

Mamata's ultimatum
CALCUTTA, Oct 30 (PTI) — All-India Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee today served an ultimatum on the Vajpayee government and threatened to withdraw from the Coordination Committee of the BJP-led coalition if the Centre failed to take steps to arrest rising prices by November 3. Ms Banerjee said here that she had conveyed her feelings to Defence Minister George Fernandes, convener of the coordination committee, when he rang her up during the day.
Over 100 killed
NAIROBI, Oct 30 (AFP) — More than 100 persons were killed and many others are missing after heavily armed bandits, many of them from Ethiopia, attacked Kenyan villages near the border, the police said today. A local newspaper quoted politicians in the region as saying that more than 300 persons were feared dead following last weekend’s raid on the Bagalla area of the northern Wajir district.
Pak attack foiled
NEW DELHI, Oct 30 (UNI) — An attempt to capture the Fateh 5770 post by Pakistani troops in the Siachen glacier was repulsed by the Indian Army late last night, Defence Ministry sources said here today. The attack, this time on the southern glacier, came barely two days after the Pakistanis suffered heavy casualties in an attempt to capture a post in the northern glacier. A sentry noticed some movement towards the post just before midnight yesterday and alerted others.
Governor’s rule
ISLAMABAD, Oct 30 (PTI) — The Pakistani Government tonight imposed Governor’s rule in the troubled Sind province after dismissing the 20-month old coalition government headed by Chief Minister Liaqat Jatoi within 24 hours after the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) pulled out of the ministry. Announcing the decision on the state television, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said the Sind province had been placed under Governor’s rule to launch a "decisive" operation against terrorists and the assembly had been dissolved.
