Hooch claims 6 lives
PATNA, Oct 27 (PTI) — At least six persons were killed and two were in a critical condition after consuming illicit liquor here, state police chief KA Jacob said today. Eight persons had bought illicit liquor from an unauthorised shop in Central Patna on Sunday, Mr Jacob said, adding they complained of nausea soon after drinking the liquor. The victims were identified as N Mahato (35), K Miyan (45), Lal Gope (40), Bhomru Myan (50), Ekbal Khan (50) and B Chaudhury (28).

Bail for Goud
NEW DELHI, Oct 27 (PTI) — The Delhi High Court today granted conditional bail to Malessam Goud, accused in the Rs 133-crore urea scam case, but directed him to surrender his passport to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Mr Justice DK Jain directed the release of Malessam Goud on his furnishing a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh and a surety of the like amount. The judge imposed several conditions before granting the bail including that the passport of Goud would be with the CBI.

Boris Yeltsin
MOSCOW, Oct 27 (AFP) — Russian President Boris Yeltsin arrived today at the Barvikha sanatorium where he is to recuperate from nervous exhaustion which prevented him from attending an EU-Russia summit, a Kremlin spokesman said. Yeltsin, (67) will undergo "a recuperation course" at the sanatorium west of Moscow, Interfax quoted spokesman Dmitry Yakushkin as saying.

19 LTTE men killed
COLOMBO, Oct 27 (PTI) — Nineteen LTTE militants and one policeman were killed in three different encounters in northern and eastern parts of the island nation, Sri Lankan Army said today. Giving details, an Army release said 12 LTTE militants were killed and several injured when Lankan troops attacked the bunker lines in northern Paranthan, near Killinochchi, last evening. Seven LTTE militants were killed and eight injured when troops ambushed their camp in Trincomalee district.

Border clash
BANGKOK, Oct 27 (AFP) — Four Cambodian soldiers were killed and one Thai ranger was injured in a fierce firefight after the Cambodians sneaked across the rugged northern border, Thai military officers said today. Fighting broke out yesterday as the Cambodians tried to pass through a Thai checkpoint on their way back to Cambodia, apparently having robbed a refugee camp in Thailand, housing mainly Khmer Rouge families.

7 TDP men killed
HYDERABAD, Oct 27 (PTI) — Seven activists of the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) were hacked to death by Naxalites of the Kondapalli Seetharamaiah faction of the People’s War Group (PWG) in Ananthapur district late last night. According to the police, the seven were killed when Naxalites attacked the house of Harichandrappa at Kokanagupalli village with bombs and lethal weapons. However, Harichandrappa, who was the target of the attack, escaped unhurt.
