WASHINGTON, Oct 16 (UNI) — The $ 1.7-trillion US Budget for fiscal 1999, which the administration and Congress, approved last night, provides for the biggest peacetime increase in US military spending since the time of President Ronald Reagan 13 years ago. The $ 9 billion in defence-related funding came on top of a $ 271 billion military spending Bill cleared by the Congress earlier represented about twice what the administration had requested as an emergency supplement.

11 die in collision
NAGAON, Oct 16 (PTI) — Eleven people were killed and 23 injured in a head-on collision between two buses in central Assam’s Nagaon district today, official sources said. The tragedy occurred at Burapahar in the district while the buses were negotiating a precarious bend killing 8 persons on the spot, sources said.

Cop sentenced
PUNE, Oct 16 (PTI) — A policeman, who raped a minor girl with the consent of his wife, has been sentenced to six years' regorous imprisonment while his wife was sentenced to two years in jail. The 13-year old victim was sent by her father for a trip to Mahabaleshwar on May eight, 1996 along with the couple.
