NEW DELHI, Oct 10 — The Chief Minister of Delhi, Mr Sahib Singh Verma, today stepped down paving the way for the Union I&B Minister, Ms Sushma Swaraj, to succeed him.The party General-Secretary and in-charge of Delhi affairs, Mr Venkaiah Naidu today made this announcement.

NEW DELHI, Oct 10 — Mr. Justice Adarsh Sein Anand was today sworn in as the Chief Justice of India by President K.R. Narayanan at the Ashoka Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan here. Justice Anand, 62, who became the 29th CJI succeeding Mr. Justice Madan Mohan Punchhi, took oath in the name of God in a five minute ceremony attended by Vice-President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and a host of other dignitaries.

NEW DELHI, Oct 10 — The AIADMK supremo, Ms Jayalalitha, today sought to move to the centre stage of national politics again with her pronouncement that she was keeping all options open including a tie-up with the Congress or the third front as an alternative to the BJP but also underlined that there was no need for her party to come out of the Vajpayee government.

EMS NAGAR, (CALCUTTA), Oct 10 — CPM strongman Jyoti Basu was under fire as the 16th party congress of the CPM took up discussion on his remark to the print and electronic media that the Central Committee’s 1996 decision to stay away from government formation at the Centre was "a historic blunder".
