Vajpayee invites Akali leaders for talks
NEW DELHI, Oct 4 — The Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition Government today earned a breather after Shiromani Akali Dal leaders promised they would not review support to it ahead of a meeting with the Prime Minister here on Wednesday.The Punjab Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, and senior leader, Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, have been invited for talks.

NEW DELHI, Oct 4 — The much-awaited reshuffle and expansion of the Union Council of Ministers may take place in the near future with the West Bengal Trinamool Congress and possibly the Haryana Vikas Party finding a place in the Atal Behari Vajpayee team.

LONDON, Oct 4 — Osama bin Laden, one of the world’s most wanted Islamic terror mastermind, has asked his Afghan and Arab terrorists to gather in Kashmir for a major terrorist offensive in the valley and beyond, Sunday Times reported.

Five killed in TN police firing
RAMANATHAPURAM, Oct 4 — At least five persons, including a woman and a teenager, were killed in police firing as violence and arson rocked Ramanathapuram town and a nearby village today in a worst caste conflict in southern Tamil Nadu in recent times, the police said.

is dead

NEW DELHI, Oct 4 — Mr Inderjit Singh, founder of Bank of Punjab Ltd (BOP) and founder chairman of Punjab and Sind Bank, died here this morning, BOP vice-president Deep Singh said.He was 87 and is survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter. Mr Inderjit Singh took to banking in 1932.

Selling livestock for harvest
MUKTSAR, Oct 4 — Farmers of the Malwa region have started selling their jewellery and livestock to raise the money required for harvesting the submerged paddy crop and deal with the economic crisis. The recent heavy rain, which flooded the fields, has also made the harvesting of paddy more expensive.
