Wife thrashed
for entering poll fray

JAIPUR, Nov 7 A
police case has been registered against BSP's Rajasthan
unit chief and former minister Jagat Singh Dayma for
thrashing his wife Urvashi in public at Behror yesterday
in a bid to stop her from filing her nomination papers
from the Bansur constituency from where Dayma too is
contesting as a BSP candidate.
Both husband and wife are
have had estranged relations for quite some time. Urvashi
has had filed complaints against Dayma with the police
earlier too. She had announced in advance that she would
challenge her husband in the ensuing Vidhan Sabha
election from whichever constituency he chose to fight.
True to her word, Urvashi went to Behror to file papers
on Friday and was staying there as a guest with Ms Maya
Yadav, President of the BSP's women wing of Rajasthan.
While Urvashi was on her
way to the returning officer's office she was stopped by
Jagat Singh Dayma. Her husband started beating her with
shoes and his hands. A journalist accompanying the woman
was also severely beaten. Holding her braid, Dayma
dragged her to Ms Maya Yadav's residence, inflicting
blows continuously. Eyewitnesses say that in the scuffle,
Urvashi's clothes were torn. Yadav threatened that if she
did not desist from filing nomination papers, he would
kill her.
Seeing the drama, a large
number of people gathered outside Ms Yadav's residence
and started shouting slogans against Dayma. Meanwhile,
police arrived on the scene and escorted Urvashi out from
the spot. She later filed her nomination papers under
police protection.
While Urvashi was in the
process of completing formalities regarding nomination,
Dayma and his supporters too arrived at the SDM's office
to file his papers. Urvashi was whisked away from there
by the police and locked in a room. She was taken out
from there after Dayma left the returning officer's room.
Later, a case was registered against Dayma at the Behror
police station.
Urvashi has sent a
complaint to the Election Commission in this regard,
urging that she be provided security guards since her
husband can kill her any time. "My life is in
danger. I can be murdered any time. My husband is thirsty
of my blood. He attacked me with an intention to kill. My
husband has illicit relations with a worker of his party
and wants to eliminate me", she has written to the
Election Commission.
