Air Marshal Tipnis new IAF chief
NEW DELHI, Oct 31 — Air Marshal A Y Tipnis, PVSM, AVSM, VM, ADC, was today appointed as the next Chief of Air Staff. Fiftyeight-year old Air Marshal Tipnis will succeed the present Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal S K Sareen, who retires from service on December 31. Air Marshal Tipnis is presently the Vice-Chief of Air Staff.

6-point action plan to check price rise
NAFED to procure, supply more onion
NEW DELHI, Oct 31 — Duty free import of pulses, abolition of 4 per cent special import duty on vanaspati and direction to NAFED to increase procurement and supply of onion are part of a six-point action plan announced by the Centre today to contain prices of essential commodities. A meeting of a group of union ministers chaired by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, here also decided to ask the states to step up anti-hoarding measures to make additional supplies of essential commodities available in the market.

NEW DELHI, Oct 31 — President KR Narayanan tonight promulgated an ordinance to allow companies to buy back their shares, issue sweat equity and make inter-corporate investments and loans without government permission.

NEW DELHI, Oct 31 — A Former Union Minister, Mr Chaturanan Mishra, who opposed the Communist Party’s line on imposition of President’s rule in Bihar, was today dropped from the reconstituted Central Secretariat of the party, into which two other veterans Geeta Mukherjee and Gaya Singh were inducted.
