Centre sends team to Gujarat
NEW DELHI, Dec 29 — The Union Home Ministry has sent a two-member team led by its Special Secretary, Mr Mukund Behari Kaushal to assess law and order situation in Gujarat following reports of attacks on Christian missionary schools and churches in the state.

NEW DELHI, Dec 29 — The visiting Sri Lankan President, Ms Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, today said India held the key to cementing the SAARC arrangement and hoped that the Indo-Lanka free trade pact would trigger similar arrangements between other countries in the region.

Mountbatten favoured Sikhs: Datta
PATIALA, Dec 29 — A new pathbreaking research on the partition of Punjab indicates that Lord Mountbatten's interference in the Boundary Commission Award was aimed at favouring the Sikhs, helping India retain Gurdaspur district and also getting Ferozepore and Zira tehsils which had earlier been awarded to Pakistan by the commission.

University departments face closure
PATIALA, Dec 29 — As many as 250 ad hoc Punjabi University employees, including 39 teachers, face an uncertain future with the university authorities unable to review their cases after having given them notices that their term will end on December 31. Though the university Syndicate had decided to extend the term of all ad hoc employees till December 3, yet no decision has been taken on the fate of ad hoc employees.
