India, Lanka sign free trade pact
NEW DELHI, Dec 28 — India and Sri Lanka today signed a historic free trade agreement, setting the pace for economic cooperation in the South Asian region.The agreement, which was signed at Rashtrapati Bhavan this evening, became a reality after a decisive go ahead by the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, who held a one-to-one 30-minute discussion with the visiting Sri Lankan President.

Jaya faces trial in more cases
CHENNAI, Dec 28 — Trial in the case against AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalitha for amassing wealth to the tune of Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate to her known sources of income when she was Chief Minister during 1991-96, commenced here today before Special Judge I.S. Sambandham, with the examination of two witnesses.

Historians told to frame code of conduct
PATIALA, Dec 28 — The Governor of Punjab, Lt-Gen (retd) B.K.N. Chhibber, inaugurated the 59th session of the Indian History Congress at Punjabi University here today and urged historians to draw a code of conduct for themselves to ensure that history was not coloured by vested interests.
